IMPHAL, Nov 17: The Assam Rifles successfully rescued a group of farmers in Bishnupur district of Manipur on Saturday, following an unprovoked attack by armed miscreants. The incident occurred while farmers were harvesting crops in Irengbam village, with assailants firing indiscriminately from Aigejang village, according to Defence PRO for Manipur, Nagaland, and Southern Arunachal Pradesh, Lt Col Amit Shukla.
Lt Col Shukla stated that the attack endangered the lives of the farmers and appeared to be an attempt to disrupt harvesting activities. Troops stationed at Irengbam responded promptly, returning fire and forcing the attackers to retreat.

Demonstrating exceptional resolve, the Assam Rifles personnel pursued the fleeing miscreants and uncovered a camp believed to have been used as a base for staging such assaults. The camp, hastily abandoned upon the arrival of security forces, contained administrative supplies, rations, and bunkers.

The discovered materials were subsequently destroyed in the presence of Kangpokpi police.
Lt Col Shukla emphasized that the swift and decisive response of the Assam Rifles not only prevented potential casualties but also helped restore calm and confidence in the region, which remains volatile.
