IMPHAL, May 20: The Assam Rifles has launched an investigation into a viral photograph showing young recruits posing with the flag of the Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA), a Chin-Kuki militant group led by former Myanmar MP Thanglianpao Guite, during a passing out parade. The Meitei Heritage Society expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that the use of the militant group’s flag by Assam Rifles recruits raises serious questions about the integrity of the soldiers, the neutrality of the force, and national security implications.
The Meitei Heritage Society spokesperson said the photograph’s circulation on social media “raises alarm bells among security agencies” regarding the partiality and loyalty of the recruits. The spokesperson also emphasized that such ideologies must be identified and stopped early to preserve the integrity and impartiality of Assam Rifles and all Indian security forces.
Assam Rifles responded on its official X account that the authenticity of the photograph is being verified and confirmed that suitable disciplinary action will be taken against all defaulters. The force reiterated its commitment to maintaining the ethos and discipline of the organization.
The Meitei Heritage Society welcomed Assam Rifles’ decision to investigate the troubling incident but highlighted that the force has previously faced allegations from Meitei groups and retired officers of siding with Chin-Kuki militants amid the ongoing crisis. This incident, they said, further reinforces those perceptions and risks undermining public trust.
