Assam to Launch First Satellite, ‘ASSAMSAT,’ for Governance and Development

GUWAHATI, March 11: Assam is set to make a significant leap in space technology by launching its first satellite, ‘ASSAMSAT,’ aimed at enhancing governance and development in the state. The announcement was made by Finance Minister Ajanta Neog during the presentation of the 2025-26 state budget in the Assam Assembly on Monday.

The state government intends to leverage the satellite’s capabilities to ensure a consistent and reliable flow of critical information, which will help in the efficient management of key socio-economic initiatives. ASSAMSAT is expected to play a vital role in various sectors, including agriculture, disaster management, infrastructure development, border security, and law enforcement.

The project is being developed in collaboration with the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe), which operates under the Union Ministry of Space. This initiative underscores Assam’s commitment to integrating advanced space technology into public service delivery.

In addition to the satellite project, the Assam government plans to involve college and university students in the development of experimental satellites. This initiative aims to foster innovation and inspire young talent, with support from IN-SPACe and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). This partnership between educational institutions and space organizations will further promote research and development in the state, encouraging the next generation to contribute to the space sector.
