Guwahati, October 22: The Assam government is set to introduce key legislation on ‘love jihad’ and polygamy during the upcoming session of the State Assembly, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters at an official function in Nagaon, Sarma said that the final drafts of both bills will be placed before the state cabinet for approval before being introduced in the Assembly.
“These will be historic bills reflecting the government’s commitment to social reform and protection of women’s rights,” the Chief Minister stated.
In addition to the two proposed laws, Sarma said the upcoming Assembly session will also include bills related to the preservation of Satras (Vaishnavite monasteries) and land rights for members of the tea tribe community.
