Agartala, Oct 9: A Bangladeshi national was killed and a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan injured after a group of infiltrators from Bangladesh attacked a BSF outpost in Tripura’s Sepahijala district. The incident took place when the armed group attempted to smuggle contraband into India near the Border Out Post (BOP) Salpokhar, a statement from the BSF Frontier Headquarters said on Tuesday.
According to the BSF, the smugglers, equipped with sharp weapons, attacked the BSF personnel around 6 p.m. after their attempt to infiltrate was foiled. The group tried to overpower the BSF jawans, with one attacker attempting to seize a rifle from a soldier. In response, the BSF fired a warning shot, but the attackers persisted, causing serious injury to one jawan.
In self-defense, the BSF fired two additional rounds, forcing the attackers to retreat back into Bangladesh. Later, BSF personnel found the body of one of the attackers, identified as Kamal Hussain from Cumilla district, Bangladesh, about 30 meters inside Indian territory.
An FIR was registered at Jatrapur Police Station, and further investigations are underway. Following the incident, a Sector Commander-level meeting between the BSF and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) was held, where the BSF lodged a protest over the assault and condemned the ongoing illegal activities at the border. Security remains heightened in the area to prevent further incidents.
