BANGKOK, April 4: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with other BIMSTEC leaders, reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening cooperation across key sectors during the 6th BIMSTEC Summit held in Bangkok on Friday. The summit brought together leaders from India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Bhutan, with discussions centered on enhancing collaboration in connectivity, development, and regional economic integration.
Upon his arrival in Bangkok, PM Modi was warmly welcomed by Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. Prominent leaders attending the summit included Nepali Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, Bangladeshi interim government Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, and Myanmar’s military leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.
Taking to social media platform X, PM Modi expressed his enthusiasm and commitment to regional cooperation, stating, “With fellow BIMSTEC leaders at the Summit being held in Bangkok, Thailand. We reaffirm our commitment to boosting cooperation across diverse sectors. May our efforts bring a positive difference in people’s lives.”
On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi met with Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing to discuss bilateral relations. The meeting addressed India’s continued support in the wake of the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that recently struck Myanmar. Modi conveyed his condolences for the lives lost and the extensive property damage and reiterated India’s ongoing humanitarian assistance through ‘Operation Brahma’. “India is doing whatever is possible to assist our sisters and brothers of Myanmar in this critical time,” PM Modi shared online.
Additionally, PM Modi held a bilateral meeting with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to discuss the enhancement of India-Thailand relations. Both leaders agreed to elevate their relationship to a Strategic Partnership. The meeting included discussions on various issues and concluded with the signing of significant agreements aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation.
Ahead of the summit, PM Modi emphasized BIMSTEC’s growing role as a driver of regional prosperity. “BIMSTEC has emerged as a vital platform for regional development, connectivity, and economic progress. I look forward to engaging with fellow leaders to deepen cooperation and ensure mutual benefits for our people,” he stated.
