Kohima, August 8: Mmhonlumo Kikon, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) sole national spokesperson from the Northeast, has stepped down from the party, resigning from both its primary and active membership.
Kikon, an ethnic Naga and former Nagaland MLA, submitted his resignation to BJP president J.P. Nadda, stating that he wished to “recalibrate” his journey and explore “new avenues of public engagement and policy work” to continue contributing to society in other ways.
In his letter, Kikon expressed gratitude for his decade-long association with the BJP, where he served in multiple roles, including as the party’s incharge (prabhari) for Mizoram. “My association with the Party has been a deeply enriching experience,” he noted, while highlighting the responsibilities he undertook during his tenure.
Party insiders suggest that his departure may have been influenced by a perceived lack of space for constructive opinions within the BJP, along with concerns over the alleged mistreatment of minority Christian communities in the Northeast, according to the Hindu.
