The Centre on Tuesday announced the appointment of Justices N Kotiswar Singh and R Mahadevan as judges to the Supreme Court of India. Their appointments will restore the Supreme Court’s sanctioned strength to 34 judges.

Justice N Kotiswar Singh’s elevation is particularly notable as he becomes the first judge from Manipur to serve on the Supreme Court. His judicial career began with his appointment as a judge of the Gauhati High Court in 2011. Following the establishment of the Manipur High Court in 2013, Justice Singh was transferred to his parent court. In February 2023, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, with a retirement date set for February 28, 2025. With this new role, Justice Singh will see his tenure extended by an additional three years.
