Chaos erupted at Mumbai’s Kalina Airport on July 16 as more than 25,000 applicants thronged for just 2,216 job openings offered by Air India.

The recruitment drive, intended for roles including airport loaders, drivers, and ground handling technicians, quickly spiraled out of control as applicants rushed towards the interview venue. Desperate for employment, some even climb vehicles and trees to reach the venue more quickly.

Authorities were forced to intervene to prevent a potential stampede, urging applicants to deposit their documents and leave the area promptly. Despite the massive turnout, airport officials managed to select only 200 candidates for interviews by the end of the day.

“All the applicants were freshers, most of them having recently completed Class 12,” highlighted the overwhelming nature of the situation. Many applicants, including individuals with advanced degrees, traveled long distances in hopes of securing a position that offered a monthly salary of Rs 22,530.

Airport loaders, responsible for crucial tasks such as loading and unloading luggage and managing baggage systems, require minimal educational qualifications (SSC/10th pass) but must possess physical strength. The position, offered on a fixed-term contract of three years, attracts a salary ranging between Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 per month, often supplemented by overtime allowances.

Political reactions swiftly followed the chaotic scenes. Maharashtra’s Leader of Opposition, Vijay Wadettiwar, criticized the state government for failing to address the severe unemployment situation. “Over 20,000 to 25,000 candidates appeared for just 600 vacancies, highlighting the dire state of joblessness,” he emphasized.

Similarly, Mumbai North Central MP Varsha Gaikwad lambasted the ruling government, questioning its commitment to providing real employment opportunities for the country’s youth. “When will this government prioritize the future of our youth instead of offering empty promises?” she questioned on social media.
