According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), nearly 1000 Indian students have been repatriated back to India on Friday due to the worsening situation in Bangladesh. The unrest, which has claimed the lives of at least 105 people, primarily students and injured hundreds more, has prompted urgent diplomatic efforts to ensure the safety of Indian citizens in the country.
The MEA announced on Saturday that its diplomatic missions in Bangladesh, including the High Commission in Dhaka and Assistant High Commissions in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet, and Khulna, have been actively involved in facilitating the safe return of Indian nationals. Collaborating closely with local authorities, the MEA has coordinated efforts to ensure safe passage for Indian citizens to crossing points along the India-Bangladesh International Border.
“Thus far, 778 Indian students have returned to India through various land ports,” stated the MEA in a press release. “In addition, around 200 students have been evacuated through regular flight services from Dhaka and Chittagong airports.”
The High Commission of India in Dhaka and Assistant High Commissions have maintained continuous contact with over 4000 Indian students still residing in various universities across Bangladesh. They have been providing necessary assistance and support amidst the challenging circumstances.
Notably, the MEA has also extended assistance to students from Nepal and Bhutan, facilitating their safe crossing into India upon request.
