CHURACHANDPUR, July 24: In a poignant display of solidarity and demand for justice, the Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights (KWOHR) joined forces with the Hmar Women Union (HWU) to organize a massive rally in Churachandpur district, Manipur. The protest, held on Wednesday, was in response to the controversial killing of three Hmar youths during an encounter in Assam’s Cachar district on July 16.
The rally commenced at 11am from Muolvaiphei playground, drawing a substantial number of women protesters who marched through Rengakai road, passing by key landmarks including the district police station on Teding Road, before concluding at the Wall of Remembrance near Peace Ground. Participants raised impassioned slogans such as “We Demand Justice”, “Stop Fake Encounters”, and “Assam Police, Down Down”, while brandishing placards demanding fair trials and condemning alleged fake encounters.
Speaking to reporters, KWOHR spokesperson Rebecca Haokip emphasized the need for an independent judicial inquiry and the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to ascertain the truth behind the deaths of the three youths.
The protesters also submitted a memorandum to the Churachandpur Deputy Commissioner, addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking justice for the families of the deceased youths.
Simultaneously protests surged in districts such as Moreh, Chandel, Tengnoupal, and Halflong where community members denounced what they perceive as excessive use of force and demanded justice for Joshua Hmar, Lalbiekkung Hmar, and Lallungawi Hmar.
It is just there fate because of what they did no remorse at all
