A shocking discovery was made in a forest in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district on Saturday evening, where a 50-year-old woman was found chained to a tree. The woman, identified as Lalita Kayi, was heard crying by a shepherd who alerted the police. Upon investigation, authorities found a photocopy of her US passport, an Aadhaar card with a Tamil Nadu address, and medical prescriptions in her possession.
Lalita, who has been in India for the past 10 years, is currently receiving treatment for psychiatric problems and malnutrition at the Goa Medical College. According to police, she is not in a position to give a statement due to her weak condition, caused by not eating for several days and exposure to heavy rains.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Lalita’s husband, a native of Tamil Nadu, may have tied her to the tree and fled. Police teams have been dispatched to Tamil Nadu, Goa, and other locations to trace her relatives and investigate the circumstances surrounding her chaining. The authorities are also verifying her nationality and the authenticity of her documents.
The incident has raised concerns about the welfare and safety of foreign nationals in India, particularly those with mental health issues. Further updates are awaited as the investigation unfolds.
