Ukhrul District Launches Community Participation Week for Women’s Empowerment

Ukhrul, August 1:    The District Administration of Ukhrul, in partnership with Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), and the One Stop Centre (OSC), launched “Community Participation Week” at Ngacham Hall, District Hospital Ukhrul on Thursday. This initiative is part of the 100 Days Special Awareness Campaign under SANKALP: HEW.

Deputy Commissioner Kengoo Zuringla, speaking at the event, stressed the importance of collective efforts to ensure justice for vulnerable communities. She emphasized the need for police cooperation in maintaining confidentiality and processing reports to secure justice for victims. Zuringla urged the community to report incidents to the police to make the environment safer for women and children, highlighting the widespread violence and mistreatment these groups face.

The event was attended by prominent officials, including ADM Kajaigai Gangmei, CEO of ADC-Ukhrul David Kashungnao, Additional SP Ringthing Hongchui, CMO Dr. Kapangring A Shimray, MS Dr. Reisangmi Raikhan, SDO Dinringam Kamei, SDC/BO Riamei Jangmei, and OC of Ukhrul Women Police SI. Meena Vashum.

Chonchuirinmayo Luithui, Central Administrator of OSC Ukhrul, discussed the OSC’s role in aiding women affected by violence. Operating since October 2019 under the “Mission Shakti” scheme by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the OSC has handled 113 cases, with a notable increase in recent years. Services include emergency response, medical assistance, FIR/NCR/DIR lodging facilitation, psycho-social counseling, legal aid, and temporary shelter.

Luithui also pointed out the challenges faced by the OSC, including social stigma and family pressure that prevent women from seeking police or legal assistance, even in severe cases. She advocated for state-sponsored justice over customary law in cases of violence against women.

Participants toured the OSC building within the District Hospital complex and interacted with staff. In 2021, the OSC in Ukhrul was recognized by the World Health Organization, in in collaboration with Kirori Mal College, Delhi University, for its inclusive advocacy and distributing information in all local languages.
