Jiribam: Fresh violence erupted in Manipur’s Jiribam district on Saturday morning, leaving five people dead, according to police reports.
The incident began when militants entered the home of a man living alone, about 5 km from the district headquarters, and shot him while he was sleeping. Following this, a heavy exchange of gunfire took place between armed groups from two rival communities in the surrounding hills, roughly 7 km from the district center.
The gunfight resulted in the deaths of four more individuals, including three militants from a hill-based group.
In response to escalating violence in Manipur, the state’s Education Department has mandated the closure of all schools and colleges on September 7. Concurrently, the Coordination Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has issued an indefinite “public emergency” alert, advising residents to stay indoors due to continuous assaults by Kuki militants.
