Q. What is Chickenpox?

A. Chickenpox is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It is characterized by an itchy rash with red spots or blisters that eventually scab over. Other common symptoms include fever, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Chickenpox is most common in children but can affect people of any age, especially if they have not been vaccinated or exposed to the virus before.

The infection typically resolves on its own within a week or two, though it can lead to complications, especially in adults, pregnant women, or people with weakened immune systems. After recovery, the virus remains dormant in the body and can later reactivate, causing shingles.

Q. How to prevent Chickenpox?

A. Chickenpox can be effectively prevented through vaccination and other precautions. Here are the main ways to prevent chickenpox:

### 1. Vaccination
– Varicella vaccine: The most effective way to prevent chickenpox is by getting vaccinated. The vaccine is typically given in two doses:
– The first dose at 12-15 months of age.
– The second dose at 4-6 years of age.
– For adults: People who have never had chickenpox or been vaccinated should get two doses of the vaccine, especially if they are at high risk (e.g., healthcare workers, people living with immuno-compromised individuals).

### 2. Avoiding Exposure
– Limit contact with infected individuals: Chickenpox is highly contagious, so avoiding contact with people who have the disease can help prevent transmission.
– Isolation during contagious period: Infected individuals should stay home and avoid close contact with others until the blisters have crusted over, which usually takes about a week after the rash appears.

### 3. Hygiene Practices
– Good hygiene: Regular hand-washing and sanitizing frequently-touched surfaces can reduce the spread of the virus.

### 4. Prevent Shingles Spread
– For people who have had chickenpox, preventing shingles (which can spread the varicella-zoster virus to others) by maintaining a strong immune system or receiving a shingles vaccine later in life is helpful.

Vaccination is the most reliable method of prevention, and it is recommended for those who are eligible.
