New Delhi, Sept 19: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) confirmed on Thursday that Atishi will be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Delhi on September 21, with other ministers taking their oaths simultaneously.
Atishi, 43, will be the third woman to serve as Delhi’s chief minister, following Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit. A key AAP leader, she has previously worked as an advisor to Manish Sisodia during his tenure as Education Minister, significantly contributing to the improvement of education in government schools.
Having joined AAP at its founding, Atishi was instrumental in drafting the party’s manifesto for the 2013 Assembly elections and has served as a spokesperson. She currently represents the Kalkaji constituency and holds the most portfolios in the Delhi government.
Her recent appointment to the cabinet in March 2023 occurred during a turbulent period for AAP, marked by Sisodia’s arrest in the excise policy case, from which he has been granted bail.
As she takes on this new leadership role, Atishi will be vital for AAP as the party prepares for future assembly elections, aiming to maintain its governance in the capital. AAP has requested early elections, with the last ones having taken place in early 2020.
This transition follows the resignation of Arvind Kejriwal, AAP’s national convenor, as Chief Minister earlier this week.
