Senapati, Sept 25:  The Mao Council has approved the acceptance of the July 12, 2024, Tenyimi Peoples’ Organization (TPO) Presidential Council Judgment and Order regarding the ongoing land dispute over the Koziirii/Kezolts/Kazing forest area during its Council Assembly held on September 23.

In a letter to the President of the TPO, the Mao Council noted that delegations from the Lhisemia (L) Khel of Kohima village and the Angami Public Organization (APO) visited them on August 30 and September 6, respectively to express their concerns.

The Lhisemia Khel representatives emphasized that their visit was not intended to undermine the Mao Council’s position but to appeal for reconsideration in the interest of maintaining peace and unity within the Tenyimi community. Similarly, the APO President expressed a desire for continued unity among the Tenyimi people, urging both sides to capitalize on the long-standing relationship between the Angami and Mao communities.

During the September 23 assembly, the Mao Council reconsidered its previous stance of non-acceptance and ultimately approved the acceptance of the July 12 TPO Presidential Council Judgment and Order.

The TPO Presidential Council judgement on July 12, 2024 earmarked areas for the three parties —Southern Angamis Public Organisation (SAPO) of Nagaland, the Mao Council and Maram Khullen of Manipur. The territory designated for the Mao Council extends from the first dry nullah behind the police barracks, descending from the Khunhyo range, and merging with the Kezol/Kozürü/Kazing river at the top. It then follows the river downwards until it meets the Makil/Ragung stream (marked in yellow on the map).

The area allocated to Maram Khullen stretches from the point where the Tingpi Karyi/Deyo-Ekhro stream meets the Kezol/Kozürü/Kazing river and the Makil/Ragung Karyi stream, covering the area below (marked in red on the map).

The remaining of the disputed land has been assigned to the SAPO (marked in green on the map).

Further, the judgement also called for a committee to be constituted with members from the three parties to look after the area for the protection and preservation of the forest and its natural resources for promoting eco-biodiversity and to use as community heritage.
