Kohima, Sept 27: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has granted bail to 45 Naga youths who had been detained in Punjab since May 15, 2024. They were arrested on various charges, including violations of the Information Technology Act and multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, according to a report by DIPR.
These youths, who worked at call centers, were accused of sending fraudulent messages to foreign nationals and extorting money. Despite being in custody for four months, their bail applications were denied by both the Chief Judicial Magistrate and the District Judge.
In June 2024, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio intervened, highlighting the difficulties faced by the detained youths and directed the Advocate General to expedite their release. The case was heard over three sessions in the High Court, where it was argued that the accused were not beneficiaries of the alleged fraud, which involved businessmen from Gujarat and Maharashtra who had not been arrested.
The prosecution claimed there were over 100,000 victims but failed to provide witnesses or conduct a comprehensive investigation, despite a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) between India and the United States. The defense, led by Advocate General K.N. Balgopal, successfully argued for bail, citing insufficient evidence. The court ultimately granted bail to all 45 youths, including 10 women.
Throughout the process, Chief Minister Rio closely followed developments, emphasizing the government’s dedication to justice. Arrangements are now being made for the safe return of the youths to Nagaland, coordinated by the Home Department and the Office of the Resident Commissioner in New Delhi.
Taking to X, CM Rio announced the bail decision, stating, “The 45 Naga youths who were in custody in Punjab have been granted bail. The Govt is making arrangements & facilitating for their smooth return home.” He also praised Advocate General K.N. Balgopal and his team for their efforts.
