Shillong, Oct 3: In a significant crackdown on illegal immigration, 17 Bangladeshi nationals, including two women, were arrested by Hallidayganj police in West Garo Hills, Meghalaya. The group had entered India through the South West Garo Hills and was planning to travel to Karnataka and Tamil Nadu with the assistance of middlemen.
During interrogation, the infiltrators disclosed that they had entered India two to three months earlier via Dawki in Meghalaya. To blend in as Indian nationals, they had obtained fake Aadhar cards.
This development comes as Meghalaya Police intensifies efforts to curb illegal immigration in the Garo Hills region, where the influx of Bangladeshi nationals has been on the rise. In just three days, authorities apprehended 31 infiltrators, highlighting the urgent need for increased vigilance.
