SHILLONG, Oct 5:   Heavy rainfall in the Garo Hills has resulted in at least 10 fatalities due to landslides and flash floods. The severe weather has caused widespread destruction, including damage to homes and significant disruptions to road access.

In light of the ongoing flooding, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has instructed district administrations to request government assistance and ensure that relief efforts reach the affected areas. He assessed the flood situation on Saturday morning, noting that all five districts, especially South Garo Hills and West Garo Hills, have been impacted.

The torrential rains, which began late Friday night, led to flooding in the Dalu area of West Garo Hills, while Gasuapara in South Garo Hills suffered severe consequences, including the loss of a critical bridge. Tragically, three people died in Dalu, and seven others were buried under a landslide in Hatiasia Songma village.

Road access between Dalu and Baghmara, along with other locations, has been disrupted due to multiple landslides. The Chief Minister has called for the identification of alternative routes to restore connectivity in the Dalu-Baghmara area.

Furthermore, he stressed the need to rebuild the washed-away wooden bridges, advocating for the use of Bailey bridge technology for quick assembly and transportation. He mentioned that all wooden bridges in the state have been earmarked for replacement with sturdier structures.

The Chief Minister urged all efforts to be made to ease public life and ensure effective relief operations. He also requested that the administration remain on high alert and continuously monitor the situation.
