Stockholm, Oct 8:   John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton have been honored with the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics for their groundbreaking work on neural networks, which has revolutionized the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning.

John Hopfield, a Princeton University professor, created the Hopfield network, an associative memory model that reconstructs patterns and images from incomplete data using principles of physics. This system became foundational for modern data processing and pattern recognition technologies.

Geoffrey Hinton, from the University of Toronto, expanded on Hopfield’s concepts with the Boltzmann machine, which applies statistical physics to enable networks to learn autonomously. The Boltzmann machine has been pivotal in AI applications, such as image recognition and data generation.
