IMPHAL, Oct 12: In light of an alarming increase in extortion cases throughout the state, the Manipur Police have established a dedicated anti-extortion cell aimed at addressing the illegal activities that are causing significant economic and psychological distress in the community.
During a press briefing at the Imphal West District Police Headquarters on Saturday, Inspector General of Police (Intelligence) K. Kabib highlighted that since May 3 of last year, numerous underground groups and criminal organizations have been persistently demanding money under the pretense of donations. This extortion has permeated national highways, marketplaces, schools, and established institutions, where unlawful taxes are being enforced.
In addition to extortion, these groups have also been involved in kidnappings, grenade attacks, and making threatening phone calls, creating economic hardship and widespread anxiety for ordinary citizens.
“Taking a serious note of all these activities, our state police have established an anti-extortion cell led by our ADGP (Law and Order), with all the Zonal IGPs as members,” Kabib stated. He confirmed that the anti-extortion cell’s primary focus will be on monitoring and supervising anti-extortion efforts throughout the state. Furthermore, the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, have deployed 15 specialized crack teams in various districts to specifically target extortion activities.
IGP Kabib further urged citizens to report any illegal demands for money they encounter, reassuring them that their identities would be protected. Despite these extensive measures, IGP Kabib reiterated the importance of public cooperation in eliminating extortion, stating that a united approach is crucial for achieving long-term success.
