GUWAHATI, Oct 14: Assam is set to celebrate the recent recognition of Assamese as a Classical Language with a week-long programme called ‘Bhasa Gaurob Saptah’ from November 3 to 9, 2024. This announcement was made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday, following the Union Cabinet’s decision to confer Classical Language status to Assamese, along with Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, and Bengali.
In a post on X, CM Sarma emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating that the celebration will feature special events across universities, schools, and civil society organizations to honor the contributions of Assamese writers and scholars who have enriched the language since the 4th century AD.
He also expressed Assam’s gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this important recognition of the state’s cultural and linguistic heritage. The state cabinet had previously adopted a resolution on October 8 to formally thank the PM for granting Classical Language status to Assamese.
The celebration, ‘Bhasa Gaurob Saptah,’ will mark a historic moment for Assam, focusing on the preservation and promotion of the Assamese language and its rich literary tradition.
