PM Modi Advocates for Peaceful Resolution of Ukraine Conflict in Meeting with President Putin

KAZAN, Oct 22:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday reaffirmed India’s position on the Ukraine conflict, stressing the importance of resolving issues through peaceful means. He expressed India’s readiness to extend full cooperation in efforts aimed at achieving peace and stability in the region, with an emphasis on humanitarian considerations.

“I have been in constant touch with you regarding the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. As I have stated before, we believe that problems should be resolved peacefully. We fully support the prompt establishment of peace and stability, with all our efforts prioritizing humanity,” PM Modi remarked.

The ongoing conflict, which has persisted since February 2022, has prompted both nations to emphasize the necessity of dialogue and diplomacy to address their differences. After their annual summit in Moscow in July, India and Russia highlighted the critical need for peaceful resolutions in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.

Modi highlighted the close coordination between India and Russia, evidenced by his two visits to Russia in the past three months. He noted that the July summit significantly strengthened bilateral cooperation, stating, “Our Annual Summit in July has enhanced our collaboration across all fields. Over the last 15 years, BRICS has developed its unique identity, and now many countries are eager to join. I look forward to participating in the BRICS Summit tomorrow.”

The Prime Minister also announced the inauguration of a new Indian consulate in Kazan, calling it a crucial step toward deepening ties with the city. “I express my heartfelt gratitude for your friendship and warm hospitality. It is a great pleasure to visit a beautiful city like Kazan for the BRICS Summit. India has historical connections with this city, and the opening of our new consulate will further strengthen these ties,” he said.

As part of his participation in the 16th BRICS Summit, PM Modi underscored India’s commitment to close collaboration within the group, viewing it as a vital platform for tackling global development challenges, reformed multilateralism, climate change, and economic cooperation. He pointed out that BRICS plays a significant role in building resilient supply chains and enhancing cultural and people-to-people connections.

Additionally, Modi acknowledged the recent expansion of BRICS, which has welcomed new members, thereby increasing its inclusivity and global agenda. “Building upon the Annual Summit held in July 2024 in Moscow, my visit to Kazan will further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. I look forward to meeting other BRICS leaders as well,” he added.

On the sidelines of the BRICS Summit, PM Modi is also anticipated to hold further bilateral meetings with other global leaders.
