KAZAN, Oct 23: At the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on BRICS nations to strengthen their collaboration in fighting terrorism and terror financing.
Addressing the closed plenary session, he emphasized that there should be no double standards on Terrorism. Modi also highlighted the need to take concrete steps to prevent youth radicalization and urged collective action on the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the UN.
Prime Minister Modi also emphasized the importance of global regulations for cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI). He pointed out the growing challenges posed by cyber threats, deepfake technology, and disinformation, stressing that BRICS has a significant role to play in addressing these issues. Modi noted that the summit is taking place amid multiple global challenges, including wars, conflicts, economic uncertainty, climate change, and terrorism.
Speaking on the geopolitical divides, Modi reiterated India’s preference for dialogue and diplomacy over war. He expressed confidence in BRICS’ potential to create new opportunities for a safer, stronger, and more prosperous future, citing the group’s collective efforts in combating the COVID-19 pandemic. Modi also stressed the importance of tackling key global issues like inflation, and ensuring security in the food, energy, health, and water sectors, which are priorities for all countries.
He also highlighted that BRICS, as a diverse and inclusive platform, can play a positive role in addressing global issues, and the group should send a clear message that it operates in the public interest, not as a divisive force.
Modi added that India is open to welcoming new partner countries into BRICS, with all decisions to be made unanimously. He further urged timely reforms in global institutions such as the United Nations Security Council, Multilateral Development Banks, and the WTO.
In his remarks, Modi outlined a vision of BRICS focused on cooperation, inclusivity, and addressing the complex challenges facing the global community.
