SHILLONG, Oct 24: A popular travel app has announced that Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, has surpassed Baku, Azerbaijan, to emerge as the most sought-after destination for Indian travelers in 2025. This annual report, released on Wednesday, notes that Shillong is the only Indian city to feature on the list, often called the “Scotland of the East.”
The survey indicates that 66% of Indians plan to “travel more” in the upcoming year. Shillong’s rich culture and combination of relaxation and adventure have helped it secure the top position, ahead of Baku and Langkawi, Malaysia.
Conducted with a sample of 1,000 Indian respondents, the report shows an increasing interest in unique destinations like Tromso in Norway, Tashkent in Uzbekistan, and al-Ula in Saudi Arabia, highlighting a desire for diverse travel experiences.
Furthermore, Almaty, Kazakhstan, has been identified as the leading value destination, with airfare prices dropping by 44% in the past year. Following closely are Jakarta, Indonesia, with a 27% reduction, and Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, both at 19%.
Cost remains a significant consideration for budget-conscious Indian travelers, with accommodation (65%), airfare (62%), and food and beverages (54%) playing vital roles in their decisions. The report reveals that Indian travelers are not only exploring new places but are also focused on meaningful experiences, with 86% planning to maintain or increase their spending on flights and 80% on accommodations in 2025. The findings also highlight a trend towards immersive experiences and shared adventures, enabling travelers to explore the world in new and inspiring ways.
