GUWAHATI, Oct 29: Alarming reports surfaced on Tuesday concerning an infant trafficking incident in Silapathar, Dhemaji, Assam, where a newborn was reportedly sold for Rs. 30,000.
Investigations indicate that the infant’s parents initially fabricated a story about their newborn’s death before selling the baby to Pegu Saharia, a resident of Silapathar. According to the findings, pediatrician Dr. Chandjit Doley had taken the child, born at Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh, to his home for medical treatment. However, it was later revealed that a couple from Nilakh, Dhemaji, had clandestinely sold the baby for Rs. 30,000.
To hide their actions, the parents informed the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) that their child had died. In response, the Dhemaji CWC lodged complaints regarding the illegal transaction with the Silapathar Police Station, detailing the alleged sale. After discovering the situation, the CWC Chairperson filed an official complaint, requesting a comprehensive investigation.
Local police have confirmed that they are currently investigating the incident to uncover the full details of this shocking case.
