GUWAHATI, Oct 29: In a significant move to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has initiated the construction of an advanced Bow String Arch Steel Girder for a new Road Over Bridge (ROB) near Kampur Railway Station in the Lumding Division. This ambitious project, estimated at Rs 60 crore, aims to replace the heavily trafficked level crossing gate ST-35 on the busy Guwahati-Lumding Broad Gauge line and is expected to be completed by January 2025.
The ST-35 level crossing, located within the crowded Kampur station yard, has been a persistent bottleneck, causing traffic chaos and frequent delays due to continuous train movements and shunting in both directions. With approximately 200,000 vehicles—averaging 198,181—utilizing this crossing each day, the need for the new ROB is evident. The bridge will span 512.58 meters and feature a 42-meter Bow String Arch Steel Girder, promising to significantly alleviate the region’s longstanding traffic issues.
The ROB’s construction is part of a broader strategy to address the surge in road traffic and train operations following the recent completion of a double line in the Guwahati-Lumding section. By streamlining vehicle movement and eliminating the problematic level crossing gate ST-35, the new bridge will not only reduce traffic congestion but also enhance safety by preventing hazardous pedestrian crossings on railway tracks.
This infrastructure improvement represents a crucial development for commuters and transporters in the Nagaon and Karbi Anglong districts, who will soon enjoy a smoother and safer travel experience. Once operational, the bridge is expected to transform daily commutes, improve road and rail safety, and eliminate a significant source of traffic-related frustrations in the region.
