The Naga people are set to honour their rich cultural heritage with the Chaga Ngee festival, celebrated by the Liangmai community on October 30th and 31st. This vibrant festival, observed among the Zeliangrongpui Nagas of Nagaland, Manipur, and Assam, is intricately linked to agricultural cycles and serves as a heartfelt expression of gratitude to the Supreme Being for the blessings received throughout the year.

Chaga Ngee stands out as one of the most significant festivals, embodying themes of purification, reconciliation, and thanksgiving. The observance of this festival includes communal feasts, cultural expressions, and resource sharing, symbolising the community’s commitment to honouring God for bountiful harvests and collective well-being.

Historically, Chaga Ngee has played a profound role in Liangmai society, fostering unity and enriching community life. Despite the influence of Christianity, which previously challenged traditional practices, the Liangmai people have embraced Chaga Ngee with renewed reverence, recognising its enduring spiritual significance in contemporary society.

The festival’s unique customs span five days, commencing with the ritual of “Chamimalapbo” (making fire) and concluding with “chagapabo,” a day dedicated to the elderly and women. Each day reflects core principles of purification, communal sharing, and reconciliation—values that resonate strongly in today’s world, underscoring the importance of peace and harmony.

Rev. Dr. Tunchapbo SP, a prominent advocate for the preservation of this cultural heritage, underscores the festival’s relevance in modern times. He notes, “Chaga Ngee offers vital lessons in honouring God, achieving social harmony, and fostering respect for all, including women, the elderly, and those with disabilities.” In an ever-evolving world, Chaga Ngee serves as a poignant reminder to uphold equality, unity, and community care, inspiring a collective return to cultural values that strengthen societal cohesion.
