KANGPOKPI, Oct 30: Ahead of Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s planned visit to Senapati district today, the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) has warned him against passing through Kuki-majority areas, calling it a “provocative” and potentially “dangerous” action that could lead to unrest.
Singh is scheduled to attend the Liangmai Changa Ngee, 2024 celebrations in Marenmai village near Kangpokpi district, an area affected by recent ethnic conflicts. A similar attempt in August was strongly opposed by the Kuki community, prompting the Chief Minister to cancel his route.
In its latest statement, CoTU criticized Singh, alleging his involvement in inciting violence against the Kuki community. The organization expressed concerns that his presence in Kuki areas would exacerbate tensions, with General Secretary Lamminlun Singsit remarking, “His presence here is not welcome.” Singsit accused Singh of intensifying political interference in Kuki territories, further eroding trust due to alleged state involvement in past violence against the Kuki people.
With lingering accusations of discrimination by the state, CoTU’s ultimatum underscores the precarious peace in Manipur following recent ethnic strife. The committee urged the central government to discourage Singh from what they see as an “incendiary” move, stressing that the state would be held fully accountable for any incidents should the Chief Minister forcefully proceed through Kuki regions.
