KOHIMA, Oct 30:   The Nagaland Cabinet on Wednesday approved the establishment of a new district for the Pochury tribe, currently located in the Meluri sub-division of Phek district, marking a significant step toward administrative recognition and autonomy for the community.

This decision, shared by Minister for Power and Parliamentary Affairs KG Kenye, who also serves as the state government’s spokesperson, addresses the Pochury community’s long-standing demand. Kenye assured that the formation of the new district will proceed promptly, acknowledging this as an essential milestone for the community.

This move follows a January 2023 recommendation by the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO), which coexists with the Pochury tribe in Phek district. During its 41st general session, the CPO suggested Meluri be designated as an Election District, issuing a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to support Meluri’s new status. The proposal included the condition that Chakhesang villages within the 20 Meluri Assembly Constituency would be reintegrated into Phek district—a step that, according to the CPO, would benefit both the Chakhesang and Pochury communities.

The Phek District Planning & Development Board (DPDB) also endorsed Meluri’s upgrade to district status, presenting its recommendation on April 12, 2023. This decision by the Nagaland Cabinet is a culmination of community and governmental efforts, poised to provide the Pochury tribe with increased administrative support and resources.
