GUWAHATI, Nov 4: In a significant effort against illegal animal trafficking, Assam Police rescued 19 dogs and arrested four suspects involved in the dog smuggling trade.
The arrested individuals, Milik Marak, Ina Sangma, and Star Marak from Karbi Anglong, along with Malu Sangma from Bhakatpara in Darrang district, were taken into custody following a tip-off that led the Panbari police in Mangaldoi to a locked room where the dogs were found confined in sacks. The suspects admitted to their methods of capturing and transporting the animals, which included placing both stray and pet dogs in sacks with minimal food before selling them.
A police official stated, “We believe the smugglers intended to transport the dogs to Nagaland for sale. A case has been registered under Dhula PS Case No. 158/24, and the accused have been transferred to judicial custody.” Additionally, six other individuals involved in the operation remain at large.
Following the rescue, a local volunteer group arrived at the Panbari police station to assist with the care of the dogs. Despite the absence of a dedicated shelter, the group quickly collaborated with several NGOs, including We Animal in Tezpur, Generosity Assam in Nalbari, and other organizations in Guwahati, to arrange for the treatment and rehabilitation of the rescued animals.
