IMPHAL, Nov 4: In a significant anti-smuggling operation, Assam Rifles successfully thwarted a major smuggling operation in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, seizing a large haul of illegal areca nuts valued at Rs 2.4 crore.
Acting on precise intelligence, Assam Rifles personnel intercepted a convoy of three goods trucks and a Tata DI vehicle, all carrying a concealed load of 350 sacks of areca nuts, at a vehicle check post in Khuga village in the early hours of November 1.
According to an Assam Rifles press release, the vehicles, attempting to pass through Khuga at around 2 a.m., were searched after being flagged at the check post. A detailed search revealed the hidden areca nut sacks beneath covers and cartons.
Following joint interrogation with Manipur Police, the seized goods and vehicles were handed over to Churachandpur’s Divisional Forest Officer for further action.
The successful interception reflects the Assam Rifles’ ongoing efforts to combat smuggling in the region, significantly impacting the illicit trade of areca nuts across borders.
