AIZAWL, Nov 6: The opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), in alliance with the Hmar People’s Convention (Reformed), gained a majority in the Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) elections, winning seven out of 12 seats, as announced by the State Election Commission on Tuesday night. The ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), along with its ally, the Hmar People’s Convention (HPC), won only three seats of the eight it contested, while HPC failed to win any of the four seats it ran for.
Additionally, the Congress managed to secure one seat, while the BJP, which contested a single seat, did not win. Officials stated on Wednesday that the result for one seat is still pending.
ZPM’s Chief Executive Member (CEM) Lalvenhima Hmar retained his Suangpuilawn seat; however, ZPM chairman HC Lalmalsawm was defeated by MNF candidate Benjamin Lalrawnliana in Zohmun constituency.
The Sinlung Hills Council, which consists of 12 elected members and two nominated seats, was formed on July 9, 2018, following a peace accord between the Mizoram government and the Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic) in April 2018. A total of 49 candidates, including one woman, contested in the recent election.
