TAMENGLONG, Nov 8: Eleven Amur falcons were released today at Chiuluan Village in Manipur after being captured on November 7 by a team from Tamenglong Forest Division and local volunteers. The capture was part of a research program led by Dr. Suresh Kumar, Scientist F at the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun, at the Chiuluan roosting site.
The research initiative, supported by the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Government of India, included tagging two of the falcons with satellite transmitters. The tagging, approved by Anurag Bajpai, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden of Manipur, is part of ongoing conservation efforts. The tagged falcons, named Chiuluan2 and Guangram, are named after significant roosting villages for Amur falcons in Tamenglong District.
The release ceremony was attended by Kh. Hitler Singh, Divisional Forest Officer of Tamenglong; Dr. Suresh Kumar; Joel Gangmei, RFO Tamenglong; and Chiuluan Village authority members, along with members of Rainforest Club Tamenglong and the Tamenglong Forest Division team.
According to the District Information Office in Tamenglong, along with the two satellite-tagged falcons, two other falcons, named Riangsuanei and Laisana, were also ringed and released. All eleven falcons were fitted with BNHS rings numbered from C58352 to C58362 before their release.
