IMPHAL, Nov 9: The Kuki Women’s Organisation for Human Rights (KWOHR) has strongly condemned a brutal attack on the Kuki-Zo village of Zairawn in Jiribam District, which occurred on the night of November 7, 2024. The attack, allegedly carried out by armed Meitei militants, led to the destruction of several homes and the tragic death of Mrs. Zosangkim, a Kuki-Zo woman and mother of three children, who was reportedly burned alive during the assault.
In a press release, the KWOHR condemned the attack as an “unimaginable act of cruelty,” emphasizing the severe violence endured by Mrs. Zosangkim. The organization described the attack as a serious violation of human rights and a direct assault on the dignity of life. “This heinous act is not just an attack on one village; it is an attack on humanity itself and an existential threat to the Kuki-Zo community,” the statement read. The KWOHR highlighted that the ongoing targeting of Kuki-Zo villages by Meitei militants has worsened the already tense situation in the region.
The organization has called for an immediate, transparent, and thorough response from the central government and security forces to ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable. The KWOHR emphasized that the people of Zairawn, particularly Mrs. Zosangkim’s family, have suffered immense trauma and that these acts of violence must be addressed seriously.
In light of the attack, which also involved the burning of homes, the KWOHR is calling for unity within the Kuki-Zo community in the pursuit of justice. The organization expressed its full solidarity with the victims, offering deep condolences and support. Additionally, the KWOHR urged local and national authorities to take swift action to prevent further violence and protect the Kuki-Zo community from continued attacks, emphasizing the importance of legal and security measures to hold the perpetrators accountable.
