IMPHAL, Nov 9: A woman farmer was tragically shot dead by suspected Kuki militants this morning in Saiton village, located on the Bishnupur-Churachandpur border. The incident happened around 11 am as the farmer was working in a paddy field, with militants reportedly firing from about 100 meters away.
BSF personnel deployed in the area returned fire, leading to an exchange that lasted around an hour. The farmer, identified as 34-year-old Sapam Sophia Leima, wife of Sapam Dayananda Meitei from Watha Lambi Santipur, was struck by a bullet and died instantly. Other farmers working nearby fled for safety, and her body remained in the field for hours due to security concerns until local volunteers managed to retrieve it.
Following the attack, authorities have intensified security in the area and launched an investigation. The incident has left the community in shock, mourning the loss of a fellow resident amidst the ongoing tensions.
