IMPHAL, Nov 13: Manipur Congress on Wednesday has called for the immediate and safe release of six civilians who went missing after a militant attack in Jakuradhor, Jiribam district. Former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, during a press briefing at his quarter, expressed his concern over the rising violence and unrest in Manipur, particularly regarding the disappearance of six people after the attack.
Addressing the media, Ibobi, emphasized that the missing individuals were “innocent civilians” and should be released on humanitarian grounds. He also criticized the state government for its failure to provide security, stating that it has been nearly 18 months since the government has been unable to ensure the safety of its citizens. “What good is a government that cannot protect the lives and property of its people?” he questioned.
Ibobi also expressed his frustration with the central government, accusing it of neglecting the ongoing crisis in Manipur. Despite repeated appeals for action, he claimed the situation has worsened, with the central government failing to bring a permanent resolution to the conflict. He urged the central government to facilitate dialogue between the warring communities, emphasizing the importance of disarmament and cessation of hostilities. He also called for a clear statement from central leaders rejecting any demands that threaten the integrity of Manipur.
The militant attack on November 11, 2024, targeted the police station and CRPF post, where internally displaced persons (IDPs) were sheltering. While three missing civilians were rescued, two bodies were found, one of which was partially burned. Search operations continue as authorities search for the six missing civilians, including three women and three children.
