INDIA Bloc Manipur Urges PM Modi to Visit the State Amid Lingering Turmoil

IMPHAL, Dec 6: The INDIA Bloc Manipur has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the conflict-hit state before the end of 2024. In a joint letter signed by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President K. Meghachandra Singh and convenor Kshetrimayum Shanta, the leaders emphasized the urgent need for the Prime Minister’s direct intervention to restore peace and normalcy in the state.

“We, on behalf of the people of Manipur and also on behalf of the INDIA bloc, Manipur, invite you for your visit to our state, Manipur, which has been in turmoil for nearly 2 years since the 3rd of May, 2023,” the opposition INDIA bloc in Manipur wrote in the letter to the PM.

The leaders conveyed the people’s distress, stating that Manipur has been in turmoil for nearly two years, resulting in over a lakh individuals being internally displaced and hundreds losing their lives. The prolonged violence has created an atmosphere of fear, trauma, and helplessness, leaving the state in chaos.

The opposition has kept three demands before PM Modi as a part of a solution required to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur. The demands include that PM Modi visit Manipur at the earliest and before 2024 ends. The opposition has asked the Prime Minister, in case he doesn’t have time, to invite all political parties from Manipur for a meeting at his office or residence in New Delhi.

The INDIA bloc said the PM’s “direct involvement with the people of Manipur can only bring peace and normalcy in Manipur”.

The leaders underlined that the ongoing violence, which began during ethnic clashes on May 3, 2023, has further escalated, affecting the lives and livelihoods of countless individuals. They stressed the urgency of the Prime Minister’s intervention to bring stability and healing to the state.

“The people of Manipur are longing to meet you on the soil of Manipur,” the letter read.
