Cachar, October 24: In a major crackdown on medical fraud, Assam Police have arrested a 64-year-old man for allegedly posing as a senior physician using a fake degree from Bangladesh and running an unrecognized medical institution in Cachar district. The accused, identified as Jayanta Prasad Das, was apprehended on Wednesday night for operating the National Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), which allegedly issued fake medical degrees and certificates to several individuals.
Cachar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Numal Mahatta said the arrest was part of an ongoing investigation into a network of fake doctors and institutions. “The crackdown began with the arrest of the first quack, Pulok Malakar, on August 3. Since then, 13 others, including Das, have been arrested,” Mahatta told reporters.
According to police, Das’s institution issued forged qualifications such as MD (Alternative Medicine) degrees without any authorization from the National Medical Commission (NMC) or other competent bodies. The fake college reportedly operated as a front to supply counterfeit medical certificates to individuals posing as licensed doctors.
Mahatta added that several of the arrested quacks, including Malakar, had obtained their credentials from NIMS. Authorities have launched a detailed probe into the network, which is suspected to have links extending beyond Assam.
Police said Das faces charges under multiple sections related to fraud and forgery, and efforts are underway to trace others involved in the racket.
