Guwahati, September 12: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday described the Special Investigation Team (SIT) report probing the alleged Pakistani links of state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and his family as “explosive,” claiming it exposes a cartel working against the country’s interests.
Speaking after the release of the BJP manifesto for the upcoming BTC polls, Sarma alleged that a Pakistani citizen and the British wife of the MP played a key role in the network. “This is a very explosive report. It is a kind of a cartel which was working to defame and demean the development process of our country. The SIT has recovered many important documents posing a threat to the sovereignty of our country,” he said.
The chief minister said the 96-page report, submitted by SIT chief and Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta, would first be placed before the state Cabinet. “It is the prerogative of the Cabinet to discuss and decide the next course of action. Once the BTC elections are over, the Cabinet will take up the SIT report,” he added.
Sarma clarified that the government did not want to create “drama” around the findings. “There must be something in those 96 pages. It does not contain some fairy tale. We are dealing with it seriously and will follow the necessary procedure,” he stressed.
For now, he said, the government’s focus was on ensuring smooth conduct of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to Assam and the BTC elections scheduled for September 22.
