IMPHAL, June 11: Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has stated that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is committed to restoring an elected government in Manipur, where President’s Rule has been in place since February 13. Singh made the remarks on Wednesday while addressing media persons at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal, following his return from New Delhi.
Singh, accompanied by Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba, said the two leaders held multiple rounds of meetings with senior central leaders, including Amit Shah, during their two-day visit to the national capital. “We apprised the Union Home Minister of the situation in Manipur,” said Singh, adding that they met Shah on Monday night from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. and again on Tuesday afternoon from 3:15 p.m. to 4 p.m.
During the meetings, the delegation briefed Shah about the ongoing blockades, rising public unrest, and persistent communal tensions across the state. Singh said the Home Minister is deeply engaged in the issue and is conducting multiple rounds of dialogue with various communities in an effort to de-escalate the crisis.
“Our state’s issues have become complex and highly sensitive as they have escalated to a community level,” Singh said, highlighting the growing challenges in resolving the conflict. Quoting Shah, he added that the Centre is committed to upholding the territorial integrity of Manipur and ensuring that peace is restored without compromising the rights of any community.
“The Union Home Minister has appealed to all communities to maintain peace, which is essential for progress,” Singh stated.
He further noted that Amit Shah has assigned them certain groundwork responsibilities, which he could not disclose at the moment. However, he emphasized the importance of a unified approach involving civil society bodies, legislators, and the general public to bring an end to the ongoing violence.
In addition, Singh revealed that the state delegation also requested the central government for a 30-day extension to complete the detection of undocumented migrants — a matter that remains a pressing concern in the region.
