NEW DELHI, July 10: In a major relief effort for flood and landslide-affected northeastern states, the Central Government has approved ₹458 crore under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Mizoram.
Among the four, Assam, which has been the most severely impacted, received the lion’s share of ₹375.60 crore, followed by ₹30.40 crore for Meghalaya, ₹29.20 crore for Manipur, and ₹22.80 crore for Mizoram. The allocations are part of a larger ₹1,066.80 crore financial package also covering Kerala and Uttarakhand, both of which have suffered from heavy rains and landslides this monsoon.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the approval via social media, stating, “More than ₹8,000 crore from SDRF/NDRF funds has been provided to 19 states this year.” The Ministry of Home Affairs added that the Centre’s support extends beyond financial aid, with comprehensive logistical backing including deployment of NDRF, Indian Army, and Air Force for on-ground rescue and relief operations.
The Northeast has been reeling from widespread flooding, breached embankments, road washouts, and deadly landslides. Major rivers have overflowed, cutting off access to large areas and displacing thousands.
Nationwide, the Centre has disbursed over ₹8,000 crore this year through disaster relief mechanisms. This includes ₹6,166 crore to 14 states under SDRF, ₹1,988.91 crore to 12 states via NDRF, ₹726.20 crore from the State Disaster Mitigation Fund, and ₹17.55 crore from the National Disaster Mitigation Fund.
More than 100 NDRF teams have been mobilized across 21 states and Union Territories, with significant deployment in the Northeast, highlighting the severity of the situation.
