NEW DELHI, Feb 21: The Central Government has decided to introduce Basic Life Support (BLS) training in school curriculums from class 9 onwards to address the rising number of deaths caused by sudden cardiac arrest. This initiative follows a proposal by Rajya Sabha member Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, who raised the issue in Parliament last year, highlighting the importance of such training.
In response to Seechewal’s request, Union Minister of State for Skill Development, Entrepreneurship, and Education, Jayant Chaudhary, confirmed that BLS training will now be made mandatory for students in class 9, as part of the Physical Education and Fitness curriculum. Furthermore, Chaudhary noted that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is coordinating efforts to develop a comprehensive BLS training module.
Seechewal’s concerns stemmed from the alarming fact that around one million people in India die annually due to sudden cardiac arrest.
