New Delhi, August 22: ChatGPT maker OpenAI on Friday confirmed plans to open its first office in India, in New Delhi, later this year, highlighting the rapid adoption of its AI tools across the country. The move aligns with the government’s IndiaAI Mission and reflects OpenAI’s commitment to developing AI solutions “for India, with India.”
The company said the India office will allow it to better serve the millions of students, educators, professionals, and developers using its tools to learn, create, and solve problems. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described India as having “all the ingredients to become a global AI leader” and called the local office an “important first step” in making advanced AI more accessible nationwide.
India is currently ChatGPT’s second-largest market globally, after the US, and one of its fastest-growing, with weekly active users increasing more than fourfold in the past year. The country also ranks among the top five developer markets globally on the OpenAI platform and has the largest population of student users worldwide.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed OpenAI’s expansion, stating that India’s investments in digital infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise solutions position the country to lead the next wave of AI-driven transformation. He added that the IndiaAI Mission seeks to ensure trusted and inclusive AI reaches every citizen, and OpenAI’s partnership will further this vision.
While the exact office location is yet to be confirmed, OpenAI has already established an entity in India and begun hiring a local team to strengthen ties with partners, businesses, academic institutions, and government agencies. The company also plans to host its first Education Summit and Developer Day in India later this year, highlighting the country’s growing AI ecosystem.
Through its local presence, OpenAI aims to build features and tools tailored for India, support local businesses and institutions, and make advanced AI more affordable and accessible nationwide.
