Chiru Students’ Union Opposes Controversial ‘German Road’ Project Through Ancestral Naga Lands

IMPHAL, July 4: The Chiru Students’ Union Northeast India (CSU, NEI) has vehemently opposed the proposed construction of the so-called “German Road” or “Tiger Road,” alleging that the planned route from Kangpokpi to Churachandpur intrudes into ancestral Naga territories.

In a strongly worded statement issued by its Information and Publicity Cell, the CSU condemned the project as a “mendacious fabrication” and asserted that no historical, traditional, or legal basis exists for such a road in Naga land. “Let it be emphatically understood that since time immemorial there is no historical, traditional, or legal foundation for any road named German Road or Tiger Road ever existing within these ancestral lands,” the Union stated.

Calling on the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to urgently intervene, the CSU urged the government to halt the project and recognize it as an unlawful attempt to assert false territorial claims. “We request the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to look into this matter with serious attention and resolve it at the earliest possible time,” the Union said, cautioning that any support for the project would amount to “a reckless endorsement of territorial impingement” that could aggravate fragile inter-community relations in the region.

Beyond infrastructure concerns, the CSU also raised alarms about the presence of Kuki armed groups in proximity to Naga-inhabited areas. It demanded the dismantling of all such camps, labeling them a “perpetual threat to peace and security.”

Reaffirming their commitment to protect their ancestral land and identity, the CSU concluded with a firm warning: “Nagas are not invaders, but we will defend our land, history and rights by all means.” The statement highlights growing tensions around territorial integrity and infrastructure development in conflict-sensitive regions of Manipur.
