IMPHAL, June 16: The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has issued a heartfelt appeal to the people of Manipur, urging collective support and cooperation in receiving the mortal remains of two young daughters of the state who tragically lost their lives in the recent Air India Flight AI 171 crash.
In a press statement issued today, COCOMI expressed deep sorrow and heartfelt condolences over the demise of Ms. Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma of Thoubal and Ms. Namlunthem Singson of Old Lambulane, Imphal, currently based in Kangpokpi. The two victims were among the many who perished when the London-bound Air India flight, AI 171, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025.
COCOMI acknowledged the unified grief observed across Manipur, noting that since the news of the tragedy broke, people—especially the youth—have held candlelight vigils, offered prayers, and conveyed messages of solidarity to extend comfort and strength to the grieving families.
According to the families, the mortal remains are currently undergoing DNA identification for confirmation. The process is expected to take approximately 72 hours, after which the remains will be brought back to Manipur for the final rites.
“In this regard, COCOMI appeals to all sections of society including civil society organisations, local clubs, youth bodies, and the general public to extend their full cooperation and support in receiving the mortal remains at Imphal Airport and ensuring their dignified return to their respective families for final rites,” the press release stated.
Furthermore, COCOMI has called on the State Government and concerned administrative authorities to make all necessary logistical arrangements for the smooth and respectful transfer of the bodies to the victims’ homes.
“If willing, the families may come forward to receive their daughters at the airport without hesitation. COCOMI is ready to extend any coordination or assistance required during this process,” the statement read.
“As a community, let us honour their return and pray for their souls to rest in eternal peace. May the land of Manipur welcome back her daughters with love and pride. And if life grants them another chance, may they return to us once again as the shining daughters of our soul,” the statement concluded.
