NEW DELHI, March 14: The Congress party has raised concerns over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s upcoming visit to Assam and Mizoram, asking why Manipur was not included on his itinerary.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that Shah would visit Assam and Mizoram for a three-day trip starting March 14, but the exclusion of Manipur prompted criticism from Congress.
Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary in charge of communications, questioned the absence of Manipur, which has been facing ethnic strife, from Shah’s travel plans. Ramesh pointed out that while Shah would be visiting Assam and Mizoram, Manipur, which has been embroiled in conflict, was overlooked.
The Congress party has been consistently critical of the Centre’s handling of the situation in Manipur and the lack of direct intervention by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The party had previously criticized Modi for his absence from Manipur during the ongoing unrest, especially following his trip to Mauritius, accusing the Prime Minister of prioritizing foreign visits over addressing the concerns of the people in the northeastern state.
