IMPHAL, Nov 9: Manipur Congress leader Okram Ibobi has pressed the BJP-led government to clarify why local body elections in the state have been postponed for an extended period, calling the delay a challenge to democratic principles. Speaking at an event at Congress Bhawan in Imphal on Friday, where the party welcomed several prominent new members, including 12 ex-BJP allies and former local representatives, Ibobi voiced his concerns.
Among the notable figures joining Congress were former MLAs Khwairakpam Loken of Sagolband and Kikhonbou Newmai of Tamei, along with past members of the Tamenglong Autonomous District Council and social activists, signaling a strengthened support for the party.
Ibobi criticized the BJP for allegedly leaning towards authoritarianism, stating that the election delays show a disregard for grassroots democratic representation. “The BJP owes an explanation to the people of Manipur on why these elections continue to be postponed,” Ibobi said, adding that the delay has increased frustration among local leaders and communities who await fair representation.
He concluded by reaffirming Congress’s dedication to defending democratic rights and constitutional protections, pledging to continue advocating for elections that reflect the people’s voice.
