Silchar, Sept 19: Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has requested the state government to rename the Silchar Railway Station in honor of the eleven language martyrs, known as Bhasha Sahids, who were pivotal in the 1961 Language Movement in Barak Valley.
In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gogoi emphasized that renaming the station would serve as a fitting tribute to these martyrs. He believes it is essential to recognize their sacrifice and impact on the movement.
A recent communication from the Union Government revealed that the Assam government has yet to submit a formal proposal for the renaming. Niraj Sahay, Principal Chief Commercial Manager of the Northeast Frontier Railway, explained that the state government must recommend the name change before it can be approved by the Union Home Ministry.
Gogoi has urged the Assam government to expedite the proposal process to honor the language martyrs with this significant recognition.
